Below are a few crop insurance reminders for the upcoming 2021 harvest season.

Appraisals

  • Chopping Silage:
    • Need to get an appraisal if you have loss.
    • Need to get an appraisal if you chop more than 50% of the unit.
    • It is beneficial to get an appraisal in any situation.
  • Grain Bin Measurements:
    • Need to have your crop insurance adjuster measure the bin prior to putting 2021 crop in the same bin as 2020 crop.

Harvest Records

It is important to keep good records to insure the best coverage and an easy claims process. For precision reporting, you need the planting maps, harvest maps and a calibration report. For traditional claims, you need to verify total production and records to show production from each unit. If production cannot be verified by unit, it is considered commingled production and can adversely affect your claim payment and coverage for the next crop season.

  • Calibration Report:
    • Calibrate monitor within 3% for precision reporting.
  • Elevator Summary Reports:
    • A summary report can verify total production.
  • Bin Measurements:
    • Bin Measurements can determine total production.
  • Other Types of Supporting Records to keep production separate:
    • Weigh Wagon Log
    • Load Logs
    • Bin Markings
    • Combine monitors to allocate total production to each field if not using precision reporting.
    • Feeding Records

Claims Notice of Loss

  • Production Claims:
    • Notify agent within 72 hours of initial discovery of damage, but no later than 15 days after the end of the insurance period.
    • The end of the insurance period is the earliest of the harvest date of the crop or the the provisions calendar date of December 10th for corn and soybeans.
  • Revenue Loss Claims:
    • If a revenue loss is due to a price decline, a claim must be reported 45 days after the harvest price is announced.
